2-Speed/Variable Pumps

With Title 20 in affect as of 01/01/2008, as a pool professional I am now by law only allowed to install 2-speed/variable speed pumps for your filtration pump on your pool equipment pad. This comes into play if your filtration pump is 1hp or more, when doing this quite often the time clock (unless you have some form of pool automation) will have to be switched out also to allow for this pump installation to take place.

The savings every month/year will be huge (see link at the bottom of the page).

Please make sure that when you have this done, whether it's by choice or necessity, that you have a licensed pool professional do the work and that they have their contractor's license to protect yourself.

Nearly silent operation and longer life are automatic side benefits of this new technology.

Few pool owners realize their pool pump can use more electricity than all the appliances in their home—often costing more than $100 per month. That’s because most pool pumps are traditional single-speed models with ¾ HP or larger, induction-style motors. For decades this was the norm because electricity costs were low and supply was abundant.

The secret to minimizing pump energy use is to operate at the lowest speed needed to accomplish a job. It takes far less energy to move water slowly than quickly. In fact, reducing pump speed by half reduces power needed to an eighth of what was needed previously to get the job done. A good analogy is your car…you get far better gas mileage at 30 mph than at 90 mph. These new pumps allow you to set and adjust pump speed to achieve the minimum energy use.

Additional Benefits of Variable Speed Pumps

  • They are incredibly quiet.
  • Add or change equipment and features without concern about pump performance and efficiency. Add a solar system or water feature or change your filter. Just push a button to set the new, optimum speed to operate with the lowest energy use.
  • Built-in diagnostics detect the most common causes of premature pump failure—overheating, freezing, and voltage irregularities—and corrective action is taken. The totally enclosed motor design provides added protection for long, trouble-free pump life.
  • Ability to alter the effects of water features. Just dial up or dial down to add height to deck jets and fountains or flow to waterfalls.
